Fido I think this should answer your first question.
Q:How do you get speed boosts at the beginning of race as well the power slide turbo boosts?
A:It is quite simple my canine-named friend, in order to attain the beginning race boost, you must hold the button at the exact right time. If you hold it too soon, you will not get it, and if you hold it too long, you will burn out.
You have to hold it at the right time. I would recommend right when the 2 starts to get bigger and disappear.

To get power slide boosts you must do the following:

1. When approaching a turn, you press and hold the R button when turning.
2. While power sliding, you repeatedly alternatedly press left and right on the d-pad until your sparks on your tires turn red. Release the R button and voila, you have achieved a power slide boost. It is easy as pie.

I know I just posted but I would recommend DryBones for those of you having trouble keeping up with the computers in the harder cups. All my wins for cups are with him except for the ones before you can unlock him, which is about 3. I would also recommend using Yoshi before you unlock Drybones b/c comparing him to everyone else, he looks like the next best thing.
