Keep your eyes peeled for shortcuts. Be careful though. Somtimes places that are short slow you down by a ton, so I suggest testing them on time trial. Some of the greatest shortcuts require the right timing and skill.
For example, At Peach Beach durin the third lap (and sometimes the second) the tide will be low. when you enter the beach part, head left and jump over the ramp. It's neither faster nor slower, but the double item block is nice.
Another shortcut is at bowsers castle were the track is somewhat a U-turn. there's a little gap along the railing where the statue bowser shoots it's fireballs sometimes. Jump through the gap and over the lava while holding left (and your brakes if your going fast).
At mushroom bridge, you can go over the railing of the birdge (Just keep to the left or right when you see the bridge coming the pathe over the railing is very risky, but if you can handle going striaght, it's all good). Keep straight, don't tuch the controller unless your going to fall off, and enjoy the ride. There are turbo ramps, and the best part is no cars!!

Unlocking karts:
to unlock the different Karts for different characters, you must complete each Cup on each cc setting (50, 100 and 150)
However, you MUST win a Gold Cup on each one, heres a short list of the special non-kart bonuses:
Star Cup (100cc): Congratulations, Special Cup has been added to Grand Prix mode.
Special Cup (50cc): You got the bullet blaster (baby Bowser\'s car)
Special Cup: (100cc): Meet the dynamic duo: Toad and toadette in the Toad Kart!
Special Cup (150cc): All Cup Tour Mode has been added to Grand prix mode
All Cup Tour (150cc): You got Mirror Mode!
Star Cup (Mirror Mode, 150): meet King Boo and Petey Pirahna1
To unlock Golden Diva, beat Star Cup Mode in 150cc. Her car, Golden Goddess, can be unlocked in All Cup Tour.
